Overview

Big Bad Buddy Bird is an episode from the fourth season of Garfield and Friends.

Synopsis[]

Roy, fed up with getting hit with pies on the farm, gets a job with the Buddy Bears, which he assumes will work in his favor.

Plot[]

Roy is strolling around the farm, when Wade literally jumps at him while crying for help and announces that today is the "National Don't Mention Meat or Someone Will Hit You With a Banana Cream Pie Day", which caused fear within the mallard. Roy initially asks, if he would really get hit with a pie for saying aloud any meat-related word, then he receives two pies thrown right at his head consecutively. The rooster expresses his demand for a complaint about this incident and gets hit with a pie for the third time. After getting hit with too many pies in the face since it is "National Don't Mention Meat or Someone Will Hit You With a Banana Cream Pie Day", Roy declares that he is quitting the farm and going to find a place where his acting can be appreciated.

Orson attempts to stop Roy from leaving the farm, without success. Roy gets hit with a pie a fourth and fifth time during his complaint. Orson says that people like Roy are supposed be hit with pies, but Roy remains firm in his decision. While gloating about his acting talents, Roy gets hit with a pie a sixth time, then he leaves. Wade approaches Orson and asks, if Roy is really leaving. During another panic attack, Wade gets hit with a pie in the same way Roy received the barrage. Orson explains, what happened, then he gets hit with a pie.

Meanwhile, in the city, Roy asks his agent, Bernie, for a job on a hit show and is given a position on one show that seems perfect for Roy. It turns out that he was assigned to "The Buddy Bears Show". After asking the Buddy Bears if they plan to hit him with pies, the bears reassure Roy that they will do no such thing, as it is not considered educational. Roy feels he has made the right choice.

The following day, the sun rises upon the farm. Wade is replacing Roy as the farm's rooster. He tries crowing, but does not comfortable with his new role. At the same time, Orson approaches Wade and leads him to the TV set, so they can see Roy on stage. Wade expresses his worries about Orson, who replies about bacon and gets hit with a pie. Apparently, the "National Don't Mention Meat or Someone Will Hit You With a Banana Cream Pie Day" is still lasting. The television broadcasts The Buddy Bears Show, where Roy is having his debut. The bears are teaching about group harmony and consequences of not getting along with the gang.

Roy has been given the role of "Big Bad Buddy Bird", who acts as an antagonist to the bears' message of group harmony: always agree with the group and "never have an opinion of your own". In each of the three scenes - the lunch at a salad bar, at the ice-cream parlor, and at the amusement park, the Buddy Bears vote to do the exact same thing, while Roy says he wants to do something else (eat Chinese food, order chocolate ice-cream instead of French vanilla, and ride on a rollercoaster instead of a horsey ride) . His stance results in 16-ton safes falling on him everytime he disagrees with the bears. After the third hit, Roy begs the bears not to drop a safe on him in the next scene, to which the bears agree. In the last scene, they drop two safes on him instead when Roy admits he wants to ride a rollercoaster instead of a horsey ride.

Having enough of the bears' antics and bad message about never having an opinion on your own, Roy (now completely injured and dressed in bandages) stops the beginning of another scene. He tells the audience not to listen to the bears and to think for themselves. The bears then go after Roy, resulting in a fight and an interrupt of the broadcast. Orson and Wade are watching the entire show on TV. The pig says "fourteen minutes". When Wade asks, what is this supposed to mean, Orson explains it is the estimated arrival time of Roy back at the farm, begging for his old job back. They go into the open to prepare for Roy’s return.

Roy runs out of the station and arrives back to the farm 3 seconds earlier than Orson predicted. Orson, at first, asks Roy how he feels about being hit with pies. Roy demonstrates he does not mind it, then he gets bombarded with pies in front of the barn upon stating various meats (they held the holiday over). Roy is given back his position as the farm rooster and everyone agrees how much they need Roy.

Trivia[]

  • This is the Buddy Bears' first appearances in a U.S. Acres segment.
  • Mark Evanier has stated that this episode drew the ire of the Standards and Practices department of another network. This was due to the episode's criticism of "pro-social" values that animated shows were forced to promote at the time.[1]
