Overview
Transcript

This is a page that goes in-depth on the Quickies from the first season of Garfield and Friends.

In total, there are 24 Garfield Quickies and 11 U.S. Acres Quickies in the first season. Most of them are based off of Sunday strips from their respective comics. While they stay true to the original comics and tell the same story, there are often a few minor changes, like added/altered/subtracted dialogue or an added/removed scene.

Trivia[]

Characters[]

Garfield, Jon, and Odie are mainstays in the Quickies, while other unnamed characters/animals have also shown up from time to time.

Garfield[]

Garfield himself appeared in every single one of the 24 Quickies during season 1, the only character to do so. He is typically the main star, and at times, he is the only one of the big three to appear in a Quickie. He often has unfortunate things happen to him, from eating sweat socks to getting half-frozen inside a birdbath, but has some good moments, like using Jon's credit card and teaming up with Odie to break the door down using Jon's chair.

Jon[]

Jon has been in 16 Quickies during season 1, the second most behind only Garfield. Sometimes, he gets a decent role, other times he just gets one line. He even outsmarted Garfield on one occasion, but usually his pets do things at his expense.

Garfield Quickies[]

Q1

Doggy Coat: After mocking Odie and his doggy outfit, Garfield is sent out in his own humiliating garb.

Doggy Coat[]

  • Quickie Name: Doggy Coat
  • Quickie Number: 1
  • Original Strip: 3/29/1987
  • Description: Garfield comes across Odie, who is wearing his doggy coat. He starts hopping around the pup, mocking him, and telling him that the other dogs are going to call him a nerd. Odie is disheartened and worried that Garfield may be right, but Garfield reassures him in a condescending way. When Jon tells his pets that it's time for their walk, Odie bounds outside happily and Garfield follows, forced to wear his own humiliating suit. He hopes that lightning will strike him and put him out of his misery.
  • Additions: Garfield assures Odie that "[He'll] be the best dressed nerd ever," something he doesn't say in the strip.
  • Tweaks: Odie wears a solid green coat instead of the checkered one he sports in the strip, and Garfield wears a blue suit, hat, black shoes, and white socks, not matching with Odie like he did in the strip.
Q2

Spider: The spider Garfield tried to squash crawls past him, who slammed a window so hard it brought the house down.

Spider[]

  • Quickie Name: Spider
  • Quickie Number: 2
  • Original Strip: 8/4/1985
  • Description: Garfield is sitting in a window when a spider crawls up and sits on the windowsill. The cat is repulsed and prepares to close the window on it. However, he slams the window so hard that it breaks, it falls out of the wall, the wall itself falls, and then the roof collapses on top of him. He thinks he got rid of the spider, but when it crawls in front of him, he realizes that he didn't, and the fallen roof completely covers him.
  • Additions: Garfield says that squashing spiders is part of his job description.
  • Tweaks: After everything falls on top of him, his last lines are changed to, "Well, at least I got the spider." After seeing the spider crawl past him, he goes, "Oh no..." before the roof covers him completely.
Q3

Bees: Odie wears his own big bee costume to scare Garfield out of the flower bed.

Bees[]

  • Quickie Name: Bees
  • Quickie Number: 3
  • Original Strip: 4/26/1987
  • Description: Garfield walks through the garden, smelling a flower, and in the mood to dive into the flower patch, when he sees it's covered with bees. He gets an idea and returns wearing a bee costume. With it on, he scares all the other bees away and dives into the flower bed, but he can barely relax when he hears and then sees a giant bee with a giant stinger next to him. Terrified, he runs away, only for the giant bee to be Odie in a costume, and the stinger was his tail. The pup laughs to the viewers, happy to have pulled one over on the tabby tormentor.
  • Additions: Garfield says, "I'm in the mood to flop on a flotilla of flavorful flowers."
  • Tweaks: Garfield opens by smelling a flower, rather than leaving out the door like in the strip, and he also tells the viewers he has an idea before returning with the bee outfit, and at the end, Odie chuckles, something he doesn't do in the strip.
Q4

Screen Door: Jon calls Garfield in for lunch, smashing his cat against the wall when he swings the door open.

Screen Door[]

  • Quickie Name: Screen Door
  • Quickie Number: 4
  • Original Strip: 8/6/1978
  • Description: One lazy day, Garfield has nothing to do but hang on the screen door, bored out of his mind. After repeating the word "bored" a handful of times, he wishes something would happen. Something does when Jon opens the door to call Garfield inside for lunch, slamming it on the wall and crushing Garfield in the process. Garfield then says that he's in pain, repeating it in a similar way to the way he was bored, and then slides down the screen, ripping it as he goes.
  • Additions: Jon wonders where Garfield went before closing the door.
  • Tweaks: Garfield says he's in pain, "real pain", and slides down the screen door, tearing it with his sharp claws.
Q5

Pet Door: Garfield and Odie will not be denied as they forcibly break the door down with Jon and his chair.

Pet Door[]

  • Quickie Name: Pet Door
  • Quickie Number: 5
  • Original Strip: 4/20/1986
  • Description: Jon watches TV as Odie barks and Garfield scratches the door, both craving to be let out. Jon says he's too tired, to which the pets respond by picking up his chair, with Jon still in it, and using it as a battering ram against the door. The pets run around the yard, Odie barks happily, and Jon thinks it's time to consider adding a pet door.
  • Additions: Jon gets annoyed by his pets barking/scratching and claims he's too tired to get up and open the door, as opposed to wishing his pets would let themselves out.
  • Tweaks: Jon protests when the pets carry him in his chair and slam him into the door.
Q6

Food Ceiling: Garfield is next to a food-covered Jon

Food Ceiling[]

  • Quickie Name: Food Ceiling
  • Quickie Number: 6
  • Original Strip: 12/15/1985
  • Description: Garfield is taking spoonful's of random food and flinging them into the ceiling. He adds dough and carrots, when Jon comes in and witnesses his cat flinging spaghetti and two eggs into the ceiling. He asks Garfield how long he has been doing that, and Garfield replies that he has been doing it for quite some time. Jon gets covered in a mishmash of green goo and random food while yelling for help.
  • Additions: Garfield says that he adds dough, something he doesn't say in the strip, and also adds spaghetti and eggs.
  • Tweaks: At the end, Jon gets covered in goo, rather than just getting dripped on in the strip.
Q7

Jogging: Garfield and Jon line up to race, only for Garfield to have a different plan.

Jogging[]

  • Quickie Name: Jogging
  • Quickie Number: 7
  • Original Strip: 10/12/1986
  • Description: Jon ties his jogging shoes and tries tricking a sleeping Garfield into jogging with him by attacking his pride. He walks up to him and and says that Garfield can't outrun a snail. Furious, Garfield takes Jon up on his offer and the two line up at the front door in a running stance. Jon count them down and he takes off, but Garfield closes and locks the door behind him. Jon tries opening it, shouting to be let in, but Garfield smiles and says that there's no need to outrun something if one can outwit it. He then goes back to sleep.
  • Additions: In the end, Jon tries to force the door open instead of standing in the window.
  • Tweaks: Jon claims that Garfield couldn't outrun a snail, instead of a garden slug, like the strip and Garfield's last line is slightly altered.
  • Subtractions: Jon doesn't say outright that he is going to attack Garfield's pride, like he does in the strip.
Q8

Learn Something New: With Jon gone, Garfield learned how to use Jon's credit card.

Learn Something New[]

  • Quickie Name: Learn Something New
  • Quickie Number: 8
  • Original Strip: 3/10/1985
  • Description: Jon walks up to a snoozing Garfield and pokes him in the head, claiming that he wants his cat to learn something new each day, if only to add purpose to his dreary existence. Jon leaves for the store, and tells Garfield to learn something. An hour and a half later, Jon returns, carrying bags of groceries, and then drops them when he realizes that Garfield learned how to use his credit card and spent his money on all sorts of random things.
  • Tweaks: Garfield holds a non-alcoholic glass instead of the cocktail glass he held in the strip.
  • Subtractions: Jon does not tell Garfield that his life is worthless or that he has done nothing with his life, like he does in the strip.
Q9

Dive Into a Glass of Water: Odie chases Garfield after the latter got both of them stuck.

Dive Into a Glass of Water[]

  • Quickie Name: Dive Into a Glass of Water
  • Quickie Number: 9
  • Original Strip: 12/1/1985
  • Description: Garfield presents Odie the Amazing, and his death defying dive into a glass of water. He then gets on the table and tries pushing Odie off the edge, but he pushes a little too hard and accidentally falls off the table himself. In the end, he gets stuck in the water and Odie gets stuck in Garfield's food bowl. Enrages, Odie chases Garfield, who is begging him to heel, and Jon tells the viewers that there's never a dull moment when one owns pets.
  • Additions: Garfield says that it's a "death-defying" dive, something he doesn't say in the strip.
  • Tweaks: He also says his next line on the table while pushing Odie--compared to saying it while on the floor. Jon, reads a book, something he's not doing in the strip.
  • Subtractions: Garfield's lines, "Go for it, Odie! I'm going to make you a star!" and "Whoah! Let go! Let go!" are removed.
Q10

Crescent Roll: Garfield holds what he thinks is a crescent roll in his paw.

Crescent Roll[]

  • Quickie Name: Crescent Roll
  • Quickie Number: 10
  • Original Strip: 7/8/1979
  • Description: Garfield stumbles upon a banquet and lists off several foods, many of which one might eat for Thanksgiving in the United States. He stumbles across what he thinks is a member of the crescent roll family, considering it's bunched up and brown. He tosses it into his mouth and swallows, admitting it's a bit dry and with subtle flavors. Jon walks in, asking if Garfield has seen his sweat socks, and the cat suddenly realizes what he ate and gags and spits in response.
  • Additions: Garfield lists off all the food on the table, ham, sweet potato, corn, and cranberry sauce something he doesn't do in the comic. Once he finds out what he ate, he starts gagging, coughing, and spitting. The comic ends before Garfield starts doing this.
  • Tweaks: Garfield's first line is changed to "Oh boy, a banquet!" His "palatable" line is changed to "flavor's a bit subtle".
Q11

Someone in My Bed: Garfield sees and greets Odie while stomping what he thinks is Odie.

Someone in My Bed[]

  • Quickie Name: Someone in My Bed
  • Quickie Number: 11
  • Original Strip: 5/6/1984
  • Description: Garfield stands next to his bed, yawns, and sees what he thinks is Odie's nose poking out from under his blanket. Furious, he starts stomping "Odie", only for the real Odie to walk up behind him. Garfield notices, but it doesn't fully sink in until a few seconds later. When it does, he lifts his blanket and realizes that he ruined his French bread and olive collection. Odie snickers at Garfield's misfortune, but Garfield is much less amused.
  • Additions: Garfield gets some more lines, "The nerve of that pooch!" after seeing "Odie" and "Take that! And that!" along with "I'll teach you to sleep..." while he stomps it.
  • Tweaks: Garfield yawns and stands next to his bed when he sees "Odie's" nose, instead of peeking around the corner. At the end, Odie giggles at his friend's expense instead of covering his face with his paw.
Q12

Howling: Odie has a TV stuck in his mouth after Garfield got fed up with his howling.

Howling[]

  • Quickie Name: Howling
  • Quickie Number: 12
  • Original Strip: 11/6/1986
  • Description: One night, Odie howls at the moon, irritating and waking up Garfield. The cranky cat gets up and decides to give Odie something to do. He grabs a TV and brings it to Odie, who abruptly stops howling. Garfield returns to his bed, dusting off his paws in satisfaction, and Odie is left with a TV in his mouth courtesy of Garfield.
  • Additions: Garfield has a couple of additional lines, "Odie needs something to do." while he sits in his bed trying to sleep and "There, that oughtta do it." after fixing the howling problem. He also dusts his paws off, something not shown in the strip, before returning to bed.
Q13

Fetch: After Odie brought Garfield a large bone, a large dog eats Garfield in retaliation.

Fetch[]

  • Quickie Name: Fetch
  • Quickie Number: 13
  • Original Strip: 4/19/1987
  • Description: Garfield seemingly wants to play fetch with Odie, using a bone as bait. Odie yips happily and is more than excited to play fetch with him. Garfield "throws" the bone and Odie runs off to get it, but the cat never let go of the bone in the first place and walks away, mocking Odie for falling for his joke. When Odie returns with a giant bone, Garfield wonders what kind of dog has a bone that big. His question is answered when a large, muscular dog eats him.
  • Additions: While Odie is excited in both, Odie barks a lot more and audibly says, "Yeah!" a handful of times, while he only goes "Arf!" once in the comic.
  • Tweaks: Garfield's second-to-last line is slightly changed, and unlike the strip, the dog ate Garfield instead of just staring and growling at him.
  • Subtractions: Garfield's "There is goes!" line is removed.
Q14

Fire: Jon is stuck in the pet door after giving his pets a fire drill.

Fire[]

  • Quickie Name: Fire
  • Quickie Number: 14
  • Original Strip: 9/4/1983
  • Description: Jon installs a pet door and tells his pets the fire escape plan: run out the pet door. He swings it and asks his pets if they understand. Garfield says that he knows and Odie nods before they both walk away. Jon decides to give them a test. He shouts, "FIRE!" behind them, and the pets leap into the air and bolt out the pet door and down the street, leaving running over Jon and getting him stuck in the pet door in a really painful position. He sarcastically tells himself that his plan was clever and thanks himself.
  • Additions: While Garfield did not have any lines in the comic, he assures Jon that he and Odie know what to do in the Quickie. Jon has the lines, "Very clever of you, Jon." and "Thanks, I knew they'd pick up on it." while he's stuck in the pet door.
  • Tweaks: In the comic, the pets bust a giant hole in the wall, compared to bursting out the pet door and getting Jon stuck.
Q15

Party: Jon gives his loyal pup party invites to put in the mailbox. Garfield thinks it's a bad idea.

Party[]

  • Quickie Name: Party
  • Quickie Number: 15
  • Original Strip: 12/14/1986
  • Description: Jon is preparing to host a party, and asks Odie to put the invitations in the mailbox, despite Garfield thinking that this will end badly. Odie tries to get to the mailbox, but the wind is blowing quite hard and he struggles to fight against it. Eventually, he is knocked backward and loses his grip on the invitations, and those are blown away by the wind. A group of random people are crowded in Jon's house. Jon sets a plate of hors d'oeuvres on the table, and says that he expected the upper crust. Garfield quips, "It looks like [Jon] got the crumbs."
  • Additions: Garfield doesn't get any lines until the punchline in the comic, but in the Quickie, Garfield notes how bad of an idea it is to have Odie put the letters in the mailbox.
  • Tweaks: Odie actively tries to deliver the mail, while in the comic he stands outside and lets the mail float away in the wind. At the party, Jon is not dressed in a ridiculous outfit and instead wears his normal clothes.
Q16

Hot Dog Truck: Garfield hangs onto a hot dog-shaped truck with his teeth.

Hot Dog Truck[]

  • Quickie Name: Hot Dog Truck
  • Quickie Number: 16
  • Original Strip: 8/18/1985
  • Description: Garfield and Jon are out for a walk. Suddenly, something catches Garfield's eye. He races off, and Jon chases him. The cat sinks his teeth into a truck shaped like a hot dog, and Jon scolds him for his decision making. At first, Garfield agrees, but then spots something else that causes him to let go of the hot dog. It's a truck shaped like an ice cream cone, and he has sunk his teeth into that as well, claiming that he has to have dessert. Jon just facepalms.
  • Additions: Garfield and Jon are walking, something not shown in the strip.
  • Tweaks: Jon's second line--the line after Garfield ate the hot dog truck--is flipped compared to the strip. After spotting the ice cream truck, Jon says, "What are you chasing now?" and Garfield's punchline becomes, "Well I have to have dessert, don't I?"
  • Subtractions: Jon's "GARFIELD!" line in the strip is cut.
Q17

Camping: Odie happily eats a sandwich after locking Garfield and Jon out of the car.

Camping[]

  • Quickie Name: Camping
  • Quickie Number: 17
  • Original Strip: 9/2/1984
  • Description: Jon drives his car to the middle of nowhere to go camping with his pets. He and Garfield leave, the cat walks on all fours, but Odie locks the car door, with him still inside. Jon hears this and struggles to open the door since his keys are still inside. Garfield starts insulting Odie, and Jon tries pleading with him to unlock it. While they do, rain clouds settle in and it starts storming. Jon and Garfield are stuck outside and Odie is relaxing in the car, eating a sandwich. Garfield notes that Odie isn't as stupid as he looks, and the pup grins maliciously at the viewers, implying that he locked his friends out on purpose.
  • Additions: Odie grins at the viewers, something he doesn't do in the strip.
  • Tweaks: Garfield's lines are quite different from the original strip. After Jon tells his pets that they're ""Miles from nowhere," the cat quips, "Miles from a good Italian restaurant, which I guess is the same thing." After Odie locked himself in, Garfield's lines, which make him sound like he wouldn't mind Odie being trapped, are replaced by insults to the pooch: "Odie, you're the dumbest dog in the world!" and "I can't believe how stupid you are, Odie!" Jon's line about being worried that Odie will suffocate is replaced by, "My keys are in there! [the car]" Odie enjoys a sandwich, instead of chips and a chicken leg.
Q18

Bird: A birdbath becomes a bird-brained idea for Garfield.

Bird[]

  • Quickie Name: Bird
  • Quickie Number: 18
  • Original Strip: 5/31/1987
  • Description: After spying on several birds in a birdbath, Garfield tiptoes over to them, trying to capture one. They all get scared and fly away, but the birdbath gives Garfield an idea. He removes the birdbath and stands with his mouth in a bowl shape. He fills up his mouth with hose water, and compliments himself for his genius. It quickly backfires when a bird as big as he is takes a bath in his mouth, and he starts regretting it.
  • Additions: Garfield hides behind a tree before he sneaks up to the birdbath. The strip does not have any dialogue, but Garfield gets two lines: "This is the most brilliant idea I've ever had." while standing like the bath and "Maybe not." after the giant bird dives in.
  • Tweaks: The birds in the comic are red, yellow, and lavender, compared to three yellow birds in the Quickie. The giant bird is also a different color, brown in the Quickie compared to light blue in the strip.
Q19

Dogs: Jon feeds Odie a big slice of ham after the pup chased his tail.

Dogs[]

  • Quickie Name: Dogs
  • Quickie Number: 19
  • Original Strip: 9/24/1978
  • Description: Garfield watches Odie run by him. Garfield looks on in disgust as Odie chases his tail through the living room, and then does the same thing next to Jon as the latter eats. The fat cat is appalled until Jon gives Odie a big slice of ham. Garfield looks at Odie trot by with the ham is his mouth, and despite ridiculing him for it, Garfield does the same thing that Odie was doing. "Hey, a ham's a ham." he explains and continues panting.
  • Additions: Garfield acting like a dog is part of the punchline. He has an extra line: "Hey, a ham's a ham."
  • Tweaks: Much of Garfield's dialogue is changed, though the general theme of insulting Odie remains the same. He says, "Dogs are THE most ridiculous thing on this planet. Odie does that [chasing his tail] all day, day in and day out. No dignity, no brains, no...anything. Look how he embarrasses himself to entertain Jon. It's absolutely disgusting. It's..." He is cut off when Jon offers Odie a slice of ham, which is different than when Lyman gave Odie a steak in the comic. However, Garfield acting like a dog at the end remains the same.
Q20

Diving Board: Garfield lies in a crumpled heap after a dive off the diving board went awry.

Diving Board[]

  • Quickie Name: Diving Board
  • Quickie Number: 20
  • Original Strip: 6/8/1986
  • Description: Garfield and Odie assemble a diving board. Once that's complete, they fill up the kiddie pool with water. Once that is full, Odie is about to climb up the ladder, but Garfield pulls him off and says that he'll be the first to try, but Odie seems to be looking at something behind him with a worried look on his face. Garfield doesn't notice and decides to do a dive involving a forward roll, a backwards roll, and a cinnamon roll for dessert, but lands hard on the grass. Odie walks up to him, confused by the instructions in his paws, only for the pool to be shown as being behind the diving board.
  • Additions: Garfield has a couple of extra lines. After completing the diving board, he tells Odie, "OK, let's fill 'er up!" Before he takes the plunge, he describes his dive, "And now, a double reverse, half-gainer somersault with a backwards roll, a forwards roll, and for dessert, a cinnamon roll."
  • Tweaks: Odie starts climbing the ladder, but Garfield grabs his tail and says "Out of the way, dog paddler! I'll be the first to try our new swimming pool!" A few words are changed from the strip, and Garfield does this at the base of the ladder, as opposed to the top of it in the strip.
Q21

Plastic Flowers: Garfield tries to kill Jon's flowers, only to find out that they're plastic.

Plastic Flowers[]

  • Quickie Name: Plastic Flowers
  • Quickie Number: 21
  • Original Strip: 1/26/1986
  • Description: Jon plants some flowers in his flowerbed. Garfield watches from the window, and decides to give the bed "the Garfield touch". He leaps out of the window, walks up to the flowers, and leaps on them. However, he starts bouncing on them and eventually bounces into a wheelbarrow full of tools, dazing him. Jon walks up and tells Garfield that he planted plastic flowers. Garfield accuses him of cheating.
  • Additions: The Quickie actually shows Jon working in the garden, unlike the strip. Garfield also crashes into a wheelbarrow that was not present in the strip.
  • Tweaks: Garfield's first line are slightly altered, though his second line is exactly the same. The flowers themselves are multiple colors, as opposed to the all white daisies in the strip. The fat cat's final line is changed to, "That's cheating!" instead of "Cheater!" in the strip.
  • Subtractions: Garfield's line describing what he's going to do to the flowers is removed entirely.
Q22

Caped Avenger: The Caped Avenger and his loyal steed break the sound barrier.

Caped Avenger[]

  • Quickie Name: Caped Avenger
  • Quickie Number: 22
  • Original Strip: 11/2/1986
  • Description: Garfield, as the Caped Avenger, leaps on Odie's back, wondering if the pup can be the his "high powered mode of transportation." Odie gives an "Ugh" look, but goes with it anyway. Garfield tells him to go faster, and faster, with Odie complying each time, and when Garfield tells him to stop, he stops so fast that the fat cat is flung off of him and into the ground, so fast that he created a dirt path in the yard. He realizes that he needs a seat belt.
  • Additions: Odie pauses for a moment to look at the audience and show his annoyance at Garfield's antics, and Garfield himself has a few extra one-liners. He tells Odie, "Go!" to start the ride, says, "Faster!" one more time than he says in the strip, and adds "OK now..." before he abruptly commands Odie to stop, kicking up a huge dust pile in the process. All other dialogue is the same, except for the first panel that some papers don't even show.
Q23

Snow: After a rough day in the snow, Garfield is understandably ready for summer.

Snow[]

  • Quickie Name: Snow
  • Quickie Number: 23
  • Original Strip: 1/4/1987
  • Description: Garfield looks out the window and sees that it snowed the night before. He runs outside to play in it, but slips on the icy sidewalk and skids into a snowbank. He still loves snow, but is instantly pelted by snowballs by a couple of boys. He quickly dives on the other side of the bank, but lands in a birdbath and instantly freezes, save for his tail. He returns inside, his top half inside a hemisphere of frozen ice from the birdbath, ready for summer.
  • Additions: Garfield gets an extra line: "I still love the first snow of the year" before getting pelted with snowballs. Him diving into the birdbath, getting frozen in it, and returning within a block of ice are all things not seen in the comic.
  • Tweaks: Garfield's first line is changed to, "All right! It snowed last night!" Jon is shown reading a newspaper, and his and Garfield's last lines are ever so slightly tweaked.
Q24

Enjoying Your Cat Food?: Garfield eats Jon's hamburger after Jon served him dry food.

Enjoying Your Cat Food?[]

  • Quickie Name: Enjoying Your Cat Food?
  • Quickie Number: 24
  • Original Strip: 2/17/1985
  • Description: Jon calls Garfield for dinner, but Jon ran out of regular cat food and is instead feeding Garfield dry cat food. Garfield is disappointed, but hearing the line, "I'm sure you know what to do with it." gives the cat an idea. He dumps the food onto the floor toward Jon, who steps on it and slips, dropping his burger in the process. He lies on his back after crashing into a table, shattering a lamp in the process. Garfield walks by, eating the hamburger, and says that he should have the food more often. A picture then lands and breaks on Jon's head.
  • Additions: After getting called for dinner, Garfield says, "Food!" Jon also has an added line. After telling Garfield he ran out of his regular cat food, "I bought you the dried kind." Jon also crashes into several pieces of furniture, something he doesn't do in the strip.
  • Tweaks: Jon's first line is altered. Instead of saying "canned cat food", he calls it "[Garfield's] regular cat food". Jon also had a steak for himself instead of a burger in the Quickie.
