Garfield debuted in 1978, syndicated in forty-one newspapers. In 1982 it was in 1000 papers. A little later (1986) it was named the "Fastest Growing Strip in History". As of 2006, the comic strip is still going strong, syndicated in over 2,500 newspapers.
