Overview

The Feline Philosopher is an episode from the seventh season of Garfield and Friends.

Synopsis[]

Garfield wants to steal a pie from the neighbor's house, with a bulldog preventing him from doing so. The Feline Philosopher tries to help by giving self-motivation speeches.

Plot[]

A neighbor sets a pie on a window sill. A sleeping Garfield smells it and finds it next door. He tries to get to it with help from the neighbor's vicious dog; when he realizes who he is dealing with, he runs off into an alley (the dog is stopped by a fence plank).

Resting in the alley is a cat known as the Feline Philosopher, who tells Garfield that he can be motivated to accomplish his goal. After the speech, Garfield becomes determined to get the pie through alternative means. He tries digging underground and walking on stilts to avoid the dog, only to be thwarted both times.

Returning to the Feline Philosopher, Garfield gets another motivational speech. It works again; this time, Garfield drags an unwilling Feline Philosopher to the neighbor's yard to get the dog away. With that, Garfield heads for the pie, determined to get it, only to be hit by a pie. He discovers that the neighbor is Binky the Clown, who has made his return to the show, and has "lots of lost time to make up".

Garfield runs off as Binky continues to throw pies at him. He reconvenes with The Feline Philosopher, who is sitting on an alley fence and questioning his career as a motivational speaker. The Feline Philosopher gives Garfield another speech.

Trivia[]

Cultural references[]

  • Two references to Looney Tunes are featured in the episode:
    • Garfield's impression of a "roadrunner" is derived from the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote cartoons (a slide guitar is played during the scene as well).
    • During one of his routine speeches, the Feline Philosopher refers to Garfield as "Sylvester".
  • In one scenario from the Feline Philosopher, Garfield inadvertently kicks a cast-iron statue of Rin Tin Tin.
  • In another scenario, Pooky is suspected of bank robbery, being positively identified by a Raggedy Ann doll.
  • At one point, Garfield tries to distract the dog with a supposed sighting of Elvis Presley.
  • Garfield thought that Binky had been traded to Hanna-Barbera for other characters.
